Levels of Realism - the little details

I honestly can’t get over the level of realism in the game,

It’d be so very easy to miss things like:

  • When it rains in game, you see ripples on the water in rivers and in puddles.

  • When it rains you see it hitting the roads and paths in some places.

  • When you’re in the woods, when the time of day shifts, the sounds die down, when dusk comes, the birds quieten down for example.

  • When running with a torch, you can hear the flames being disturbed.

  • The trees, flowers, grass, bushes, all move - independently from each other. They don’t all just sway in one direction.

  • When lockpicking, you can see Henry’s hands moving behind the “mini game”.

  • When Henry has been in a fight, he actually looks wounded.

  • Depending where you are, the sounds change. For example, when you’re in the Monastery gardens, you can hear the sounds of wood pigeons (one of my fave sounds).

  • NPCs have a morning routine, they get up and go for a wash and have breakfast.

  • NPCs doing mundane things like going to fetch water at wells, and actually turning the well handle to draw the water up, the bucket rushing and then them emptying that bucket into their own bucket. It’s a small thing but it impressed me.

  • If you break into the monastery, at certain times of the day, the monks gather, walking one by one into the chapel hall, and then they sing. It’s quite lovely.

  • When walking in certain types of light, Henry casts some great shadows, making you feel like you’re playing more than just a pair of disembodied hands :joy:

Are there any small details that stick out in anyone else’s minds? I love hearing/reading about things like this because it really opens your eyes to how much work and thought are put into these games,.

I have to commend Warhorse for thinking of so many small things and adding to the realism of the game. Attention to detail is top notch and shows they really care about the atmosphere in the game.

Realistically you should get crushed by a tree while midnight-storm-walking in the Woods

when it rains … out of blue, clear sky … this little details
Really i have seen all of this in older games starting with Gothic 1 - and better implemented. I am not really impressed

I don’t have those graphical details. I find the graphics to be quite disappointing actually. When it’s raining at night, I can’t even navigate, because the rain drops that are nearest to my face are so pixelated, it’s crazy.
I’m playing on ps4, and I’m wondering why this is? I mean, there are no graphics settings, but I not nearly have such a beautiful experience as I see from screen shots.

Great post. One thing that I like is the grass and looking around with the bloom effect that not overly done kinda sets back nicely. It’s just the best being outdoors

Unfortunately consoles simply do not have the capacity to perform at the same levels as a PC.

That’s so stupid, what else would you buy a console for?! Isn’t that the whole freaking reason you get a console. Sheesh. I knew this, and now having it confirmed here by you just really ruined my day.

Okay I’m being dramatic, but still

Most people buy a console because of price and ease of use, not for amazing graphics.(Horizon Zero Dawn excluded) lol

The rain effects are common in games, though still praiseworthy for an indie dev.
Everyone looks wounded if they’re wounded. After you train with Sir Bernard at the Rattay training grounds he looks as if he’s about to drop dead.

Regarding the sounds: if you talk to people in a church it’ll sound like it sounds in a church, so even dialogue changes, I find that pretty impressive.

I was kinda surprised at the nightsky seemingly being an actual nightsky.
Meaning, you can spot actual constellations.
Ursa Major, Taurus and the Plejades.
Have to draw out my astronomy book to see if I can spot some more.

I like how if you change cloths, or your cut, or stinky the NPCs notice. I also like how your reputation effects the NPCs and diologue.

In one quest where you infiltrate the monastry, you have to follow their cycle to not draw attention.

When it’s raining at talmbarg if you go under shelter you’ll see 3d rains drops drizzling down, it looks different from normal rain too

Good god, you look like you’ve been assaulted.

They say that to me when both me and all my gear is at 100% too. Apparently you’ll look like you’ve been assaulted if you ride from Rattay to Miller Wotzhek (or whatever his name is) and back.

what bout withcer3?)

The only thing that has disappointed me so far with realism is how stupid wildlife AI is when you fire arrows at them.

I pelted a dear with two arrows and he just turned and looked at me. lol.

Oh, I also forgot about horses getting stuck in fences if you time the jump wrong! lol

They are pretty stupid, for me they usually run but only like 2 metres then stop.
