Lockpicking ruins this game on console

Exactly @Fifavenue. I cant tell you how many chests you cone across in the wild that have amazing loot. I have more gold than i know what to do with really. And i love it.

@Bowdon yes I agree he should help you with more, but you can reload also and practice. Dint use a heavy hand you want light and steady.

Light and steady would fit better than being heavy-handed, too.

Lol i hoped he was gonna give me one at a time until i picked it too

I’m playing on Ps4 and it took me about four days to finally get the hang of it, I’m not completely mastered yet but almost there. Now just the very hard locks giving me gip (just one out maybe eight of the very hard locks is tricky until forty tries later). Initially I thought it was the mechanics and got annoyed, but now I find it rather easy. It’s not like Skyrim where you can basically open master locks the first time you try (and I can) because it just takes the player knowing how to move subtly and “feel the vibration”. Henry has to build the skill before it gets easier as well as us getting the right subtle gestures to do it.

Everything in this game takes work and I think a lot of people get frustrated with not being able to be a master of everything in a day. This game isn’t meant to spoonfeed us all the skills right away, we’re meant to chew and work the meat of it down gulp by gulp. Sometimes you’ll choke, (maybe even to death on occasion) but once you get to where it feels satisfying, it’s worth it.

Exactly @GratuitousViolets

Well I’m going to try a couple more times.

Is there anyway to buy schnapps in rattay? I’m out and keep having to reload from waking up.

It makes it difficult because if you go slowly the lockpick still snaps, even when you’re on the sweet spot. it feels like its timed as well.

I noticed the game won’t let me follow the main quest without lockpicking skill.

Ok i tried it a few more times and again failed.

It seems when it gets half way the globe starts majorly shaking.

Putting the game away until the patch comes out.

Thanks for the help guys.

It’s probably something to do with my hands as I have problems with my thumbs so maybe its that. Though I’ve never ran in to a brick wall like this before.

I can’t even find where it shows my lockpicking skill level? If I knew that then maybe I could just go around breaking lockpicks until the skill raised. Anyone know where it shows that skill level?

You can make savior schnapps very cheaply. Go to door behind the alchenist in rattay. There is a alchemy brewing station. You get savior recipe for free  and its fun making it

Also just try to make a visual reference point where the sweet spot is the largest.

Make sure to find the large sweet spot 1st then turn in unison. It really took me a while to get the habg of it as well. But now i am actually really good at it anf even very hard locks tremble before my lockpicking

Dont give up, you can do it and we all believe in you!

To find yoir skills (on xbox) hit down on d pad to access inventory then r bumper to switch tabs

Lockpicking is last skill

Just remembered r trigger to select “player” then r bumper to change tabs

I’m playing on PS4 and finding it fairly easy now to pick even very hard locks in about three seconds (still hit the occasional one that gives me trouble). The hardest part of it was not getting caught or heard. It just takes practise to get it right.

It feels like it’s deliberately meant to be challenging so that you have to decide whether it’s worth it being a thief. Crime doesn’t really pay well in this game initially - you end up paying more fines or doing more jail than not, it takes a lot of work to get good at being stealthy and get away with crime, lol.

Lock picking helps a ton with treasure maps and bandit chests

Is it just me or is there a hidden difficulty system in each lock type? It seems like some locks are genuinely more difficult than others of the same type. It feels like there might be a few hidden difficulty settings that you can only determine while trying.

Like some of the others said, it’s tricky till you get the hang of it. I’m on ps4, I pretty much now only have a bit of trouble on very hard locks.

Bit of advice… At first, I noticed I was paying too much attention to the right analog (the sweet spot). Once I started focusing more on rotating the left analog, I started getting better. Try focus on prioritizing a smooth rotation of the left stick/thumb, and let your subconscious sort of do the right thumb by feel.

Someone mentioned already, going too slowly can be a detriment. Smooth and swift I find better.

Another tip that works for me… Wherever the sweet spot is, start the left analog stick’s rotation in the complete opposite direction of the sweet spot. So if the sweet spot is around 9 O’clock, start the left sticks rotation at 3 O’clock. The opposing directions of my thumbs helps me keep the sweet spot in the right position. It seems a lot easier this way for me, as opposed to starting both sticks in the same position and moving them together.

I also find when the sweet spot is close to the outer edge of the circle, the lock is much easier to pick as opposed to when the sweet spot is close to the center of the circle.

Anyway, keep at it! Just keep trying it different ways. It’s definitely tricky till you get a few.

Read a skill book and buy a training level from peshek to give you a little head start on it. Votoar, the trader in talmberg sells lockpicks. Once you’re level 3 you get a perk that makes lockpicks last twice as long. Also another perk soon after that starts the lock closer to the end point. You’ll find once you get to that point they come wayyyy easier.

I tried more times this morning and can’t do it.

I admire that you guys can do it, but the system is broken. It’s a system that seems to be overly difficult at the start and gets easier EVEN against hard locks. That should be the other way around.

Also why is the truck listed as easy? As a tutorial quest why aren’t the first ones very easy?

Also the game makers purposely made it difficult by charging a high price for lockpicks, when lockpicks are needed a lot in the game. Even you guys have said when you get to level 3 on the skill you’re hardly breaking lockpicks so you’re not going to be buying them. Again, its punishing new players.

Someone said even when you break a lockpick you get exp. I found the lockpick skill and you get 4%. What use is that.

Bad game design on console and that is probably why they are patching it. As it shouldnt be this difficult at beginner level. I think on the PC version I could easily have done it. But I’m not buying the game again on there.

I’ve no doubt if I made it to skill level 3 in lockpicking I’d be flying through them with ease.

I wont be replying to this thread until the patch comes out. I’ll go back to playing dark souls for a break lol.

I was also terrible at lockpicking and almost gave up because of it, but i kept persevering and have ended up pretty good at it. This is on the PS4 btw. The practice chest also relocks immediately as soon as you pick it, which means you can also very easily level up to level 3 straight away which lets you upgrade lockpicks to double strength, making it very unlikely to break! Here’s my recommendations:

  1. Go to the Miller and ask him to teach you lockpicking. You will be transported to a chest at the mill with him standing next to you.

  2. Use a Saviour Schnapps and save the game at this point, this lets you reload and keep practising if you break all the picks.

  3. Look at the chest to bring up the lock. Find the sweet spot , if you are unhappy with it, press circle to cancel, then look at the lock again, the sweet spot has moved. Keep doing this until it is in a good position for you. (My recommendation is get the sweet spot so its right by the centre, just around the rim of that centre circle, it gives you a great reference point to follow, and means hardly any motion on the right stick either).

  4. Once you are happy with the position, then go ahead and pick the lock. Some people prefer having the controller laid flat on the table as that gives you better dexterity on the left stick. I have no preference either way!

  5. If you use the position i recommend in step 3 for the sweet spot, you should find picking the lock fairly easy. as the right stick doesnt have to move much. When moving the left stick, start by pushing the left stick fully upwards, and then make an anti clockwise movement round the full outside edge of the stick’s movement. Don’t hesitate moving as that will cause breakages.

  6. If you fail with all your picks, then reload your save and start again, and repeat.

  7. If you are successful picking the lock, then open the chest (it is empty), then close it again. Then look away from the chest and back at it, you will find it’s locked again already.

  8. Keep repeating the above steps of unlocking, opening and closing, then unlocking again. It will let you do this over and over again until you have levelled up to level 3, after which the crate stays open. Once you are at level 3, the picks are much stronger and you should find lockpicking so much easier!

Please do not give up, I almost did and was waiting for the latest patch but gave it one more go, and now i can unlock all very easy and easy locks, and most hard locks, Another tip is to go into the PS4 system settings and turn off controller vibration, makes the controller much easier to hold!
