New interview with Daniel Vávra

And besides, I think we’ll all have a lot of better things to do then just kill kids in the game. Unless Warhorse specifically makes us kill children in order to complete a quest, I highly doubt it’ll matter that the children are killable.

As much as we continue talking about this, how many of us are actually going to focus on killing kids for fun outside of a quest? So far all of us want them to be killable, but only for realism sakes. And again, there would most likely be a consequence for doing so. This isn’t Bethesda with chickens.

True. But I would still hardly call that a major issue. If the Cumans raid a village they’ll probably kill everyone, children included, or they kill just the men and abduct the women and kids.

Either way, there is always a limitation to realism. How to deal with orphans is IMHO more a minor issue while the question whether the game should have any children at all is IMHO quite a major issue.

Doesn’t have to be Cumans. Even bear could make you the same service (heh) and he probably wouldn’t sell woman and children to slavery.

My point is that even if there is only a slight chance, you still have to solve it somehow.

True to that not having children is much bigger issue.

Surely not me. Im a bit oversensitive in this. Im able to load relatively older save when I find injustic or something I could have done better (more as good guy) - totaly obsession.
Thats why I love games where you cant save. I can enjoy the story flow without tempting to load, lol.

Which brings up another point; will there be saving or autosaving? Because this game using only autosaves would be a good and bad idea, both for the same obvious reasons.

Good: Can’t go back to un-f**k a situation.

Bad: Can’t go back to un-f**k a situation.

A lot of games include an optional mode for people who don’t want to be able to save anywhere; I imagine KC:D will do something similar. It’s great if you want to play that way, but it shouldn’t be forced on everyone.

Can someone fill me in on why it is such a big deal to have children? I never load into a game and wonder, hey where did all the children go?

Immersion it makes the cities and villages feel more realistic to have children running around.

How often do you load to a game that has REALISM as its main selling point?

I find the whole concept of killing children in video games and not being able to talk about it hilarious to be honest. I talked about it a few years ago on my forum, on this specific “Taboo”, cause it still is. Porn in games is not someting special anymore, you can have sex in games like Mass Effect or Dragon Age and I agree why not?

However in my opinion there are only three major taboo’s that still exist today in Gaming, I call them “CNT” or “Children, Nazis and Torture”. Children because if you include them, you can’t harm or kill them, doesn’t matter if you can kill animals or old people in whatever way you can imagine, that’s all fine, but children?! No says America (let’s be honest it’s mostly America) that can’t be done!

Nazis in the specific case that you always kill them, since they are the “only” evil side in all major wars. The only thing you can’t do is play as a nazi and kill Americans or Soviet or Japanese unless it’s online or for one specific mission.

This is something I find so stupid to begin with…I mean many nazi soldiers were normal people who had to fight unless they wanted to be killed for disobeying orders and some of them actually helped the allies or even jews. So why not make a game where you play as a nazi who turns out to be good for example? Or in my preference a story of two characters let’s say one American and one German soldier that you both use during the storyline and they get to know each other and in the end…who knows what can happen.

And torture because well the term itself explains it already it’s torture. Doesn’t matter if you see it in movies or read it in books, or that it happens everyday in real life, it can’t be done in games.

People have to realize two important things: Games like this are mostly made for adults and adults know these kinds of things and can handle them. Secondly, games are not real, your actions are not real, therefore you are not really torturing a guy, shooting a soldier or even killing a child, it’s all virtual stuff. And only very sick people will do these things in real life, games have nothing to do with it, there are sick in their mind that’s all.

I would say its mostly countries like Germany with heavy censorship laws regarding video games. Killing children has pretty much always been frowned upon in movies, games, and shows. But right now everything wrong is Americas fault.

Well they started a war that was responsible for the deaths of 60 million people not to mention the 11 million that were directly killed under them so yes i would say Nazis being portrayed as evil is accurate.

Uh red Orchestra, Men of war, Company of heros Battle field 1942 and several other world war 2 games you can play as Germans and kill American and Soviet troops. You can also play as Japan and kill American and soviet troops.

Lets back a little bit here. You should replace the word Nazi with German soliders. Yes many German soliders probably weren’t homicidal maniacs like the Nazi party. Not every German was a Nazi remember that. A lot were forced to fight for their corrupt government which was run by the Nazis. Nazis were very very evil. Now average German soliders simply fighting against their will were not evil. How ever i dont like that as of late people are excusing Germanys actions in world war 2 and justiying them. They were 100% in the wrong for starting that war and people should stop trying to justify it.

On the topic of children I agree with you. Its stupid that people freak out when children are killed but thats the way things are. War horse could quite possibly get slapped with an Adult only rating if they ship KC:D with kill able children. And good luck selling your game will with an AO rating.

I would hope that KCD will receive a Mature rating in the first place…

Yeah but AO is different than M. Steam does not sell AO games along with many other places. Not to mention it would be banned in several different countries probably.

Oh I agree completely that AO would not be beneficial for Warhorse, but I think the content in the game itself should hopefully receive an M. I’d also say that it being a game that’s trying to deliver its story in a realistic and historically accurate way, having killable children wouldn’t cause an AO rating. I think it would maintain its M rating.

This game isn’t targeting the same people that buy GTA, so I think it needs to be understood in that context (to whomever makes the rating decisions).

Yeah, AO rating would mean NO steam release, NO Playstation release and NO Xbox release. Sugesting them to go for AO is like going fullMcIntosh.

Yeah its a shame what happend to Hatred. The political correct dicks slapped it with an AO rating to try and kill its chances.

Yeah, but AFAIK they haven’t accepted the rating yet and so they most likely be able to sell their game on Steam. So far they are still allowed to be there. The problem is that they won’t be allowed to publish their game on PS/Xbox if they have AO rating, but also if they don’t accept the rating at all, which sucks for them.

And little OT; I was kinda dispointed by the devs of Hatred when they said that they don’t plan to include children into the game because “it is somehow too much for them in this type of game where killing is essential”. I don’t mind that children won’t be there, it’s not supposed to be realistic game afterall and children would be really irelevant anyway, but I have a problem with their argumentation, because they are basicaly contradicting their own words. Their philosophy for the whole time has been “we are sick of PC bullshit, this is just a game and we want to show that it doesn’t matter what happens in a game, it’s just fun and applying your moral standards on a game is stupid”. And then they say that something is “too much” for a game, which is imo hypocrisy, because it implies that they actually apply their moral standards on actions in games and they basicaly say that it does matter what you do in a game.

yep, if their artistic statement is based on not adhering to any pc norms, and pushing the boundary as far as possible, holding off from child killing is actually rather laughable.

that’s why hatred will be nothing more than a gimmick-laiden trolling tool, not a real social commentary.

but lets face it, child killing is a fake moral standard. anyone who takes the time to think about it will realize it’s not big deal, but the majority defer to status quo and tradition and unquestioningly consider it taboo.

Uh…you and I should talk. Like seriously, I have the same idea, just a little different.

If someone joined the Nazi party they most likely weren’t good hearted nice people. Now sure the western or eastern front from the perspective a German solider who resented the Nazi party and Hitler would be an interesting game with an interesting story.
