Pebbles reward bugging out if you own a horse already

Platform: PC
Version: 1.7.2
(As far as I’m aware, the bug was present in all earlier versions and never resolved.)

Description:
If you own a horse before starting The Prey, then after you finish that quest and receive Pebbles as a reward before starting The Hunt Begins, it makes Pebbles unusable. You can mount him, but he won’t come when called and you can’t access his inventory. As far as I know, there is no way to switch over to Pebbles from your previous horse, even if it’s worse (which is likely at this stage of the game.)

Reproducing the issue: As stated.

Not a bug. If you really want Pebbles though, you can set him as your horse with the cheat mod.

Who buys a horse before you’re given Pebbles?

How is it not a bug? If you receive something as a reward, but the game doesn’t take your previous actions into account and prevents you from using it, then it’s a bug. They expected you not to have a horse at this point, and while The Prey quest did take that eventuality into account, The Hunt Begins quite obviously didn’t. Having a horse prior to receiving Pebbles renders him permanently unusable. At the very least the quest should be rewritten to allow you to choose between accepting Pebbles or keeping your current horse.

Me  I got the cheapest horse in the game just to travel faster. Pebbles is my horse, currently standing at the station east of Rattay. Is it possible to switch horses, when the stable at Prybislawice is finished? Anybody knows?

The whole fucking point is that Henry is poor and incompetent until later on, he gets a horse for a reason, so you can buy more important stuff.

Where tf is that

It’s a possibility, especially in later playthroughs. The Prey changed accordingly (with different dialogue with Hans, different cutscenes and everything), but it seems there was a failure in communication and the next quest in line promptly forgets about that possibility - the dialogue is the same, implying you do not have a horse yet, the on-screen notification is the same (you now own your first horse, blah blah) and the ownership fails to transfer.

Just play the game how it’s meant to be played…

There is no “way the game is meant to be played.” If that was “the only way it was meant to happen” then they wouldn’t write the hunt quest with Hans differently if you have a horse, would they? They gave you freedom to complete quests before continuing the main quest line, so OBVIOUSLY you can scrape together enough money to get a horse before then (Boxer costs around 600, which isn’t very much even at the start of the game.) What I’m complaining about is that they promptly seemed to forget about it in the next quest.

The horse is yours. He’s just not the horse that comes when you whistle.

If you’re going to go to the trouble of buying a horse before that quest, it is most likely a better horse than Pebbles.

No. You can switch to Pebbles with the cheat mod, but if you sell Pebbles then he’s gone forever. If you got a horse before him, then you can park Pebbles in the stables and ride him whenever you like.

The whole basis of the fucking story is that Henry has to work his way up, he’s struggling to scrape together 6 groschen before the raid on Skalitz and you’re spending 6 hundred on a new horse not a few weeks later…

“Stop playing the game how you want REEEEEEEEEE…”
This is you, throwing a temper tantrum. I did not cheese anything. I just did sidequests and got enough money to buy a horse before continuing the main questline. There is no time limit. Even just selling what you had on you after getting back from Skalitz should be enough to get you started.

Better than Pebbles - not necessarily. It’s quite logical to get a horse ASAP on subsequent playthroughs, and it doesn’t matter which one, so you might wanna go as cheap as possible. I took the time to explore Neuhof before it was raided, and I bought the cheapest horse I could.

Me throwing a tantrum? The game has a story, the only reason you’d know where to get a horse, is if you checked the wiki… the game gives you a free horse, you don’t need to go out to a stud farm to buy one when you shouldn’t be able to afford to pay for food without work…

Logical, yes. Following the basis of the story, no. Follow the main quest which is Henry’s progression through medieval Bohemia instead of remaking him…

Looting bandits or Cumans is pretty easy, and you’ll easily have enough money to get any horse in the game with minimal time or effort. You can also just steal one.

They used to let you keep using the horse you rode to Talmberg on, but it despawns in current patches.

Yes, I understand the game has a story. Are you deaf? They wrote the possibility that Henry already has a horse into the MAIN QUESTLINE. They made whole goddamn new CUTSCENES for the hunting quest with Hans for when you have a horse by then. So who the hell are you to say “this is not how it’s supposed to happen?”

They made cutscenes for both eventualities you prick, but if you’ve noticed, there is ONE main quest where WH planned for you to have a horse and TWO where you don’t, see where I’m going? WH made both sides possible but one favoured…

Wow, amazing, we’re getting somewhere.
Now I just want the storyline to be consistent - if it accepts the eventuality that you have a horse in the seventh quest in the main line, it should not suddenly start ignoring it in the eighth. This is an oversight in writing and denying the fact or screeching about how I’m not playing it how you want me to play it does not change that fact.
