Poll: Main Characters face, Yay or Nay?

Still no fan of the face, but at least they got rid of that terible haircut. New haircut is not very fitting fo son of blacksmith in my opinion, but at least it’s not so out of place.

I’m sorry, I’ve been around the Internet twice, but I cannot find. Please, mind you give me a clue who is that Geralt, the hero of the Slavic myths with uber-Saxon appearance? O_o

You can’t find the truth on the internet my young padawan. Look deep into your heart.

Bump Bump Bump… this theme is not yet over! :rage:

I think it is a perfect time to remember Dan’s words about this topic. -->

"We are currently doing casting for the main hero. He should be young, masculine man with strong voice, who really looks like he means business when he says something about breaking your jaw, but still with some sense of humour, sarcasm and with a sparkle in the eye. And believe me it is not easy at all. For some reason, for me not quite understandable reason, today’s overwhelming majority of young actors (and now I really do not want to trigger anyone) has skinny trousers and they are terribly emotional. The whole situation is manifested by the fact that when they have to say the sentence “I have found the keys”, they start to cry. And if you tell them to play it cheerfully, they start to cry again.

And I am not exaggerating anything, we really start our test scene with this sentence and indeed the vast majority of actors for some incomprehensible reason acts like finding the keys is the biggest tragedy in life. I of course do not see any problem in wearing skinny jeans or being emo, I see the problem in fact that everyone wears skinny jeans and is emo. You can see this fact in Czech series where almost all of the bad guys are foreigners or non-actors and they are terribly embarrassing. I feel like they did something wrond at film schools (not only in the Czech Republic). In the 1980s, people like Landa or Matasek were studying there because such actors are also needed. Today it is better to go to the gym and learn bodybuilder to play before trying to find a guy among the actors. I am also fascinated how many actors have a speech defect. It is about ten times more than in the ordinary population.

We are making a game from Czech environment. Let’s say a lot of characters had German origin (cca 30% of the population) at that time. We scan Czech people for supporting characters, but for the main characters we want, or better we have to choose English-speaking actors if we want both - the appearance and the voice. So I am dealing with this topic right now, if Englishman or American looks like Czech. And I have a feeling he doesn’t.

Have you ever noticed how we Czechs have full lips, small chins, small cheekbones and rounded shapes? Have you noticed how 90% of Czech actors don’t look masculine even if they have muscles? The classic Hollywood tough guy with strong features is mostly Irish or some German. So I have to deal with the choice of more masculine actor that can look too much like a foreigner and if he does, does it even matter? The accents are another problem. All Americans do not want us to use US actors because of their accent. Personally, I don’t mind. On the contrary the English “singing” and theatricality doesn’t look very suitable for Czech environment in my opinion, but for English speaking people British English sounds more historical. And now what?"

It was super fast translation, so please don’t mind the mistakes both grammatical and stylistic. By the way Geralt was a perfect example of gaming Ken for me. Like a plastic figurine modeled to please everyone. The sex scenes were so empty for me because of this reason. Everytime he was supposed to take his pants down I thought there is nothing in them. So I am really happy for Tom. Both face and voice.

I agree. As a man of Czech descent born in Canada, I was ecstatic to finally be able to play a character that actually looks similar to me. I am rather disappointed that the character is now a more generic Anglo-Saxon man that has been any piece of popular fiction for the past century.

Can you, please, tell me who is that goddamn Geralt everyone is talking about?

Geralt of Rivia from Witcher series

Oh, thanks. Witcher again… Everyone is talking of that Witcher nowadays. Is it worth playing?

It is

Certainly, I loved all 3 games (even though 1 is pretty old and bit weird for today standard)

I enjoyed the gameplay of 1 (with the FCR mod installed at least) - I had more issue with some of the liberties taken with story and setting (from the book’s heritage) - it made some of the story a bit clumsy, and other bits strange.

Witcher 2 was for me the weakest of the three (but I did enjoy it (again with the FCR 2 mod)), but Witcher three and the two main expansions were excellent games. Hearts of Stone had some particularly good story moments.

Some others didn’t like The Witcher, but took to Witcher 2 and 3… so don’t be totally discouraged if you can’t abide the first game (I did find it impossible to get into with the vanilla combat, but when I retried it a few months later with the modded “full combat rebalance” I found it much more accessible)
There was perhaps too much focus on levelling and equipment in the Witcher games - handwavium away in the first because of amnesia, but not IMO terribly fitting for a ‘best swordsman in the world’ class witcher for the second and third titles.

Thats funny, I actually liked W2 probably best (especially after Enhanced edition on nightmare difficulty). I was at the time absolutely blown away, how EXTREMELY branching the second act is - I mean it was like completely another campaign and story, so I had to play that multiple times just to experience everything.

But yeah, objectively W3 is absolutely awesome - especially start of main game and both DLC´s are truly top notch gaming experiences (didn´t like mid-to-late main story part THAT much, but it was still high above average).

This!! My sentiments exactly

I didn’t play the first Witcher, but instead came straight into TW2:AoK Enhanced Edition. And man was I blown away. It still stands up in my mind as one of my favourite modern day action RPG experiences… Wild Hunt built on that foundation. But as you say, the branching second act of TW2, and Nightmare with the greater tier of weapons / armour. Just incredible
