changed my mind to
"I am OK with that, but I will play it in 1st person anyway."
Or as KoRn said, “You can do it, you can do it, you are Head dude!”
from the way it’s described, it sounds exactly like that. as vavra says, another camera option like in racing games. i see crash’s point, it sounds like something dev already using for development and can be used for walking or riding around without much issue, why take up a stretch goal. on other hand, war horse may be running out of plausible ideas for stretchgoals, so need something that won’t be crazy feature, but can make with just budget provided by strechgoal.
good compromise i think is to have it as a smaller increment in the stretchgoal provided they decide they want to include it.
Something like that is part of most engines nowadays.
No need to build something from scratch.
How do you think they take screenshots which are not from 1st person?
Also, gameplay and so on doesn’t have to be adjusted to work just because of a free camera option.
3rd person perspective on the other hand requires more work. Because things have to be changed to make it work properly. There are more things to consider (see comparison by @LordCrash ).
But I didn’t demand to waste any money on that. Mod tools and the tools Warhorse themselves are using (and promised us) will give us this kind of freedom for free.
I still feel like … so, uh, guys, we are making the new Tomb Raider game and we decided to make it also FPS. So, uh, yeah, we need you to give us another 400k to fuck up your favorite game … thanks guys
I will not use 3rd person but I would be happy for those who want it. If 3rd person will be implemented @warhorse should add a tickbox at the start of a new game if you want to enable/disable it. You could expand this idea by adding a “hardcore mode” for the next stretch goal. For example: no 3rd person, no saving, permanent death, stronger enemies etc.
I dont get the point about how 3rd person would be a bad stretch goal or the quality of the game would suffer. I think quite the opposite is the case. Dan already stated that it wouldnt be hard to implement and will not cost them 400 000$. This money will be used to improve the game and other features, so its acutally a good thing for those who already backed KCD.
I think that most of the alternative stretch goals I’ve heard so far are actually bad ideas.
For example: “Let me build my own house!” Well THIS will cost a lot of money and delay the release due to a huge amount of work.
Or: “Add 20 new perks!” Well, either a perk is usefull and helps me roleplaying my character, than it should be in the game already. Or its not.
And: “Add minigame XY!” See above.
Stretch goals shouldnt be elementary game mechanics, they should be features we can live with or without. I dont need a codex/dog companion/playable female character etc. to enjoy the game. But I need a good skill system, fight system, smithing, alchemy and some other nice minigames. I think 3rd Person is a perfectly good example for this.
BTW Hello community!
Another manic street preacher… :-/ Yeah, sky is falling and the game would totaly change for those who want to play in 1st person camera… oh wait, no it wouldnt :-/
It’s how i feel. It’s about principle (“We are sorry, but we do not plan to allow you to control your character in 3rd person view (TPV).”) and stretch goal which sucks hard. So save your “oh wait” fetishism for another time.
I think it 's a good option to enable player’s choice.

my thoughts exactly…in the cutscenes you can see the character and perhaps they can add mirrors or other reflecting objects to admire your character in…A shiny frying pan or something.
Absolutely not! I pledged for that “realistic open world FIRST PERSON medieval RPG” and NO third person as previously stated that it would be first person only.
I think it would be wiser to invest this extra money in an interactable environment or something…a justice/reputation system…Factions to choose between that will define who is your friend and foe
I’ll most likely play in 1st person only. But 3rd person could also make the game more interesting for some people and lead to some more backing. If it isn’t a problem for you to implement, and won’t totally screw with the deadlines, go for it
As someone said earlier though,3rd person is probably something the modding community would implement eventually anyway…
Having it as a stretch goal is a bit of a waste therefore imo … They could just provide all the details of the tool they have so it will be easier for the modding community to build this 3rd person for those who want it.
Stick to the formula ( and what backers signed up for) "realistic open world first person medieval rpg"
Anything that adds another layer of depth to the gameplay itself would be a way better stretch goal too
Well, I have voted, but seeing this heated discussion, the best would be to forget about strech goals. Which cannot be done, as we have more then a year to go:-(
I would like to able to switch to 3rd person just for the sake of screenshots / admiring my beautiful Henry character in his glorious attire. The free screenshot camera + timestop would be better option. Perhaps toggle-able in the menu because many players would find such solution irritating surely.
I wont save it for anither time, it is how I see it. Beside that, I know you yourself love that kind of rethoric :- )
After all My Vote goes for 3rd Person Cam,
here are my reasons(yeah i know they were mentioned above a lot of times ):
-I pledged cause i wanted to 1. help developement by good comments and suggestions and 2nd to pull down this “Only first person cam view” :P…so many thanks for this thread/poll !
-3rdP View would get people interested in the game who are afraid of 1st person only
-3rdP is better in fightingsituations with many enemys and some quests, like FP due to better overview
-id like to see my char moving ,see how the equipment looks like etc.-> only 3rdP
So far my OP…i hope the’ll implement/enable 3rdP or the COM/Modder will do
I think I will play the game in 1st person view. I love the realistic environment and want to see it from the 1st person view. In the alpha I catched myself standing on a hill and looking down on the village for 5 minutes… just standing and admiring.
But it would be nice to switch to 3rd person view from time to time (in cities for example), to admire my new found/crafted/bought/… armor outside the inventory screen.
So I think for me it would be a nice to have but no must have.
I could understand if someone wants to take screenshots with the character in
So I wouldn’t be against a toggleable screen capture mode(it should be an extra setting not stretch goal imo)
However,to preserve the ambient vibe of the realistic open world, best to stay with the first person view for the game.
Suddenly Dark messiah intro came to mind…
In the link above the intro of the game is shown:a cyclops attacks the city and a guard pulls you to safety.I think that is a great example of how first person adds that needed excitement/vibe to a game…which 3rd person gameplay strips away from it
Yeah 1stP has more realism in the way it impacts the view of the scene to the player but on the other hand…normal senses are missing, the way your body/brain matches everything together (what you hear, see, feel, smell etc) gives you much more awarness of the whole situation, then any 1stP View on a normal monitor can generate eventhough normal field of view is bigger and you still can turn your head around and you can see postitions where the momentanous char can’t even look at
