Shield + long sword or short sword?

I used to use a shield in the fight. Should I choose short swords? Or is it consistent to use a shield and a long sword?

as far as I know, Long sword Combos don´t work with a shield. So with shield, rather go for the short sword.

You should try using an axe with a shield

A long sword is also called a two-hander and as the name says it´s used with two hands. So you cannot use a longsword with a shield. At least in real life. I would use a shortsword+shield against easy enemies. A longsword against mid enemies. And an heavy battle axe+shield against hevy enemies.

From my experience the axe has done really well against all types of enemies

Thank You
It sounds understandable

But axe is slower than short sword. But it has power agaist iron armour.

Thank You for answer

I use longsword for everything. I have warhammer and a shield on my horse if something goes wrong, but never used it so far. Just train enough and fight a lot with your preferred weapon and you can use it all the time.

Without shield I have problem with defence agaist stab!?

Longswords are OP, but suck with Shields.

Always use shortswords/mace/axe with shields.

Actually, the “long swords” in the game are really Bastard swords or “hand and 1/2” swords. As such, in reality, they could be used with one hand although at a loss of control. To mimic that, you can swing but can’t perform combos if using a shield.

Personally, I think you can get quite enoug defense out of a longsword once you have good armor

My experience is the St Michael with shield works but requires patience and endurance. Have to wait for right moment and 1-hit kill shots aren’t easy to come by. Hit-avoid-counter-block-etc. The sword responsiveness lacks… so chaining is slow(er)

Without shield, you have to watch stamina especially when surrounded, but once you hit it’s (much) easy(-ier) to chain quick repeat strikes for the kills. It’s actually a bit scary… yesterday a bandit Italian bascinet with Aachen dyed brigandine and matching quality stuff approached. Found an opening. Bang-bang-bang-dead … happened so quickly.

What is OP?

Thank You a lot

@Jan-Martin OP in this context is OverPowered. In other context it can be “Original Poster” (in this case You) or “Original Post”

@Mikeck is imho right. With decent armor you are able to get enough defense. I don’t like shield as it is too slow. With longsword, easiest to do is just spam thrusts with mouse wheel, while oponent is out of breath simply finish him off by a hew (left mouse button). But with longsword you get much more options later in the game, that thrusts are really only for the beginning.

I find most of these opinions wrong.
Sorry, but swords are definately the best choice.
Plenty of good combos, very good weapons like Herod’s, St. Michael’s, Magdeburg’s blade and of course the OP St. George’s sword.
Swords are great against everythig in this game.

Maces and axes are really cool, but they are way below swords. You can clearly see the focus on swords in KC:D just by the number of special moves or even the stupid imaginary sword during all combat cutscenes.

If you wanna use a mace the Ceremonial mace at 61 blunt damage ( base non perk) and shield is decent against plate. The combo is up there with the swords in the same damage range.
Throw Bain poison ( on PC pro-bain mod) and rusty edge perk on any weapon and it gets better. ( poor runt with this…)

I agree with vilkolak. Long swords are the best overall…WITHOUT a shield.
I had to stop using the St George’s sword and switch to the Magdeburg sword because the St. George’s and Herod made it a bit too easy.

Yes, gamemakers sat: “this game is sword centric.”
