Because many of the answers here factually false, I have to awaken (necro as they say) this old thread a bit (since it came up in my Google search):
a) You can of course use the Longsword with a shield as such. By of course, I mean it works in-game. Just a fact.
The Longsworld is therefore what is commonly called a bastard sword (can be used one-handed or two-handed).
b) I think that some Longsword combos can be done with a shield, but the majority of messages on the Internet claim they do not work at all with a shield. I will test again to be sure (Nov. 2018). My hesitation is warranted by the diversity of answers on the web, which often are bullshit. Wish they would make that more explicit in the descriptions, along with making Bernard’s tutorial clearer (some bits are misleading). ]
EDIT: That said, you can presume that Longsword combos do not work with a shield unless someone proves otherwise.
The Longsword scales on Strength and is a bit slower than the Shortsword. It is also slower combined with a shield. But it has more reach and generally more damage and also more Defense than a shortsword.
Many feel the shield is not worth it in this game. as you can parry/block/Master strike/Riposte/Dodge using only your Longsword. That said, the shield blocks more easily and of course stops arrows. Anyhow, the shield is good with a mace or an axe, as these weapons have low defense.

I still do better with a ceremonial Mace and Bouche shield. especially against plated foes. With good strength, perks and bane poison/dollmaker at mid game they are to me prey.
like ceremonial mace and axe a lot… a whole lot but don’t get as much range to keep separation from multiple bandts/Cumans swarming me (iow, get outflanked easier). when i want to eliminate any doubt, it’s Stinger and heavy shield (or bouche shield) for me.
reminds me. went stupid during one playthrough of baptism. went up to Runt when i had a solid red screen in HC. killed him. don’t fully understand why Runt is so hard for some.
I know… I literally backed him into a corner after taking a rage potion and beat him to death with 18 unarmed skill non HC
For poking only, St Geogre is still better than Stinger because of better reach, even when using with shield.
A high puncture long sword for on foot and a high edge long sword for mounted. They kill so fast that you do not get to really enjoy the special features of the melee combat like master strike and combo. I am using a bad long sword just to try to trigger a combo… my sword and strength where both 20 with my defense only at 6.
I struggle with the reach on maces especially when fighting against multiple opponents. Haven’t tried axes but I guess the reach would be the same as with maces…? Unless the weight of the shield isn’t a problem then it’s good with anything other than the long sword.
The terms “Longsword” “Bastard sword” and “one-and-half sword” are actually synonymous, referring to a primarily twohanded sword, usem as a sidearm, which became prominent when plate armour came along, as it lowered the need to carry a shield, two handed weapons being much more versatile than one handed ones.
