I would like to share the experience I got from the training tutorial and compare it with your own experience.
I like the way how the fighting in the camp arena was introduced, (side quest to win some money), still for later version of the game (Beta) I would like to have direct access to the arena to practice my skills. I found myself being not very good in the combat system or at least I probably did not understood what the trainer is expecting me to do.
I used XBOX 360 controller for the game.
The beginning of the fighting tutorial was easy to understand, however the more complex techniques like counter attacking and combos were somehow hard for me to perform correctly.
Not only
-
I had constant problem to control the view camera with my right stick in combination with the character movement and body attack area selection - feature to actually LOCK ON the opponent would be helpfull,
-
but I was also never sure if some actions which were required me to perform I did correctly or not.
Expecially when a combination of buttons in the combo were needed to press in sequence I still could not figure if I am doing it right or if I miss matched something.
-
COMBOS: “Changing the zone in the middle of an attack”, but should I do it three times or two times to get the successful combo hit, or the zone should be change three times. I did not understand this part of the tutorial. Also I did not not if my timing was correct or to slow or fast:-( This needs to be improved.

I was quite happy with the dynamics of the cobat system and with the way how you improve your skills. You are trying to block the opponents blow or evading their attacks, fine, your defensive skill is being increased. This is just fine and good approach.
These were my initial thoughts from the sword fighting in the current version of the game. Let me know your thoughts…I hope I will train better next. Actually having some kind of FIGHTING SCHOOL in the game would be nice.
