for starters assad is not responsible for all them deaths . he is one side of a war invloving thousands of clans all in the fight for their own personal reasons .

however russia does not want assad in power forever , what it is proposing is that he steps down slowly and acts as a transition government . every time we get rid of a dictator it fails because we leave behind a power vacuum , and every bloke with an AK goes for the power instead of the government handing over power slowly and properly .
peace needs to be established before we can begin a peaceful transition .
his view is one that a vast chunk of the west is now agreeing and i think the US is warming to it , but of course wont admit it as it would be a huge blow for Obamas "tough leader " image
