What is your favorite historical time period?

I would go for thirty years war. Touring the europe as a lowly musketeer in some war bussinesmans ranks must have been a unique experience. Being promoted for courageous acts or exchanging favors with army officers. Read Peter Eglunds Ofredsår (“Years of War”) which describes ascendence of a young man through military ranks and social classes. And as mentioned above, love the historical period but I wouldnt dare to face that world fo real.

I wouldnt stay true to my colours if I did not mention Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth during the cossacks uprising. And the following great northern war. Exciting times indeed!

My personal pick for the best period in history would be the era since 1920s to 1950s. If we put aside the tragic events around WW2 and the onset of Cold War era, on the side of art, design and fashion this era had an incredible style and class that still resonates strongly even today and keeps an ongoing influence on our current culture in many ways.
Not to mention many outbreaks in science and technology that also had crucial influence in the decades to come.

This era got unfortunately too tainted and eventually buried by the consequences of the rise of fascism, nazism and communism to worldwide influence.
Ended way too early and way too badly, imo.

i think i’d be able to make it in the 1950s us. it was an era of prosperity. i honestly wouldn’t want to be reincarnated in 14th century as some warrior poet. it’s nice to fantasize, but once in that role, i doubt the mentality is any different from soldiers of today. and what’s really attractive about these roles is the idea you’re doing something different. clearly if you were a person of that historical time, you’re not doing anything different.

I agree but I am just trying to show snejdarek that a roman guy isn’t that bad compared to us. A third of the world population lives on a wage of less than two dollars a day. A world average wage would come down too 18.000 a year. Now realize how that nameless cog in the wheel of a democratic society here is just plain rich compared to all the other folks walking around. The "richness"comes from somewhere at the expense of other people not much unlike your average roman guy.

In regards to my ancestors hard work, yes they did a great amount of work that contributed to our present day wealth and held on to our colonies into the late 50s. But if you don’t see the similarity between the Roman empire and the colonial empires from 1550-1945 (which incidentally also had slavery during the longest period of is it’s existence) then there is no helping you.

Hey, at all times the mass of mankind has been brought by a few “elites” with some threadbare arguments, religion, or directly by prey to the fair wage their (life)achievements. If we can learn anything from history, it is to recognize the process and this to avoid as much as possible. Therefore (true) history lesson is so important. But you should also be as honest with yourself that you can not publicly lamented against states whose benefit is taken with thanks for itself purchase.

Interesting what a simple, trivial question as anything can be.

I would be a Pict in the Scottish Highlands, being able to live as someone that people will try to understand and learn for hundreds of years. and still be left with curiosity as to who we are, and why we disappeared. So i go for the wild west, because be able to travel around like that and i would rather like to be a bounty hunter actually, because even it is very dangerous. You still get to see a lot of places while traveling after criminals and stuff So that would be life for me

I love LOVE documentaries so I’m into most periods. Very interested in historical conflicts like WWI, WWII, Victorian era, pirates, knights, samurai, the space race.

If I could go anywhere It would be to Santorini before the last big eruption, say 20 years before. I’d like to go back and document everything about the civilization and city there. Draw pictures, plans etc. And bury them somewhere safe.

I really like the American revolution and the Roman empire when it was at its height. I think a story from the role of a continental army solider or a guerrilla fighter during the revolution would be cool. Another cool game would be the realistic story of a roman solider not that crap ryse.

Do you think today (western) moral is the definitive and only true one? I wonder what a roman patrizio or someone from the middle ages or even an european from late 19th century would think of your life and “moral” but i guess they wont be very positively impressed…

Anyway back to the topic if i’m able to choose a decent social position i think anything from the persians wars to the first half of the 20th century would be really interesting,
since i cannot choose a single one i’ll make a few examples:

-Cesarian (and then Octavian) officer during Roman Civil Wars, this is one of my childhood dreams, i was always deeply fascinated with roman culture and history (also my interest for videogames came from there my first one was Caesar III)
-a medieval lesser lord or knight, i mean protectecting your village, be just to your subject, jousting, saving damsel in distress ride aside your murderous liege and all the other knight in shining armor while you tramp filthy crossbowmen, what a man could ask more?? (to avoid the filthy crossbowmen bolts to start with)
-a medieval lesser lord but this time in some middle-east setting, Persia maybe… both prior the fall of the Sassanid and after the arab conquest would be interesting
-a very honorabru hatamoto during the sengoku jidai era… a Takeda one maybe
-and finally europe between 1800 e 1910, before everything starts going downhill…

This hole thing was about someone from the present choosing to be someone from the past. So he would be judging someone from the present as someone from the present for his or her choice. And in the slave kills slaver insident he as someone from the present kills someone from the past because he took his presentday perspectiv to the past, as part of his identity.

I’d probably choose the Migration period and watch rome burn, or maybe check out samos kingdom. Or you know not because realistically i don’t speak the languag or know the costums the quality of live would be terribel and there is no return right? This hole thing isn’t really about changing history is it? So i am not going there. Edit: obviously I would be a tourist

What I said is that I have no understanding for someone wishing to be, basically, a warrior/murderer in that period.

The people killed then were no less people than those who are dying today. Dreaming about being a viking - and inherently raiding England or other place and slitting throats of civilians in villages around the coast (which was much more common than actual engagement against enemy soldiers) is, for me, well the same as having dreams about running around Utoya and shooting children.

I am not judging the period people, I was referring to contemporary people wanting to be in shoes of oppressors/killers/murderers millennia or two ago, stating that I see no difference between saying you would want to be such a person years ago or tomorrow. I think there is something inherently wrong with people who admire Breivik as same as those who admire, for example, Cesarian officers during Roman Civil Wars. People who dream of blood disgust me, notwithstanding whether in their dreams the blood is on the Roman plains or in New York subway.

There is a clear difference between saying “I admire Roman culture and would like to live then (full stop)” and saying “I admire Roman culture and would like to be an officer during a civil war.”
