Combat System Update!

For those who don’t understand blocking system and think that you can just hold a button and be fine - please give your attention to term “stamina” in video. If you will just hold block, you will lose stamina and fail very quickly. Same with hack & slash tactics. And of course there is also a timing, you have to time your moves correctly of you will fail too.

This is quite interesting in regards to that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iF_K-P0AwfI

I think they could have explained a bit more in depth what goes into actually fighting.

Two things that mainly worry me is the much-mentioned block any attack-button, and the other thing is the mention of stamina. While stamina is an important and valid thing to take into consideration, I haven’t really come across a game with a stamina bar that feels realistic in any way.

An example is games where you can’t run for more than this and that amount of time (based on x perks), when realistically you would probably not stop running if you were tailed by a superior being in the food chain. Adrenaline should also be taken into account.
But I suspect they’ll make something sensible out of stamina, in combat and otherwise.

Not a fan of defense that amounts to simply pressing a button. There should be skill involved

There is., If you just hold the button, then you jsut do static parrys and loose a lot of stamia.
If you wait and press it the right moment, you do a “move”! that gives you an opening so you can hit the enemy.

So the skills is in hitting the parry button at the corrct time.

Also I got the impresion that holdning the parry button takes more stamia than just attcking do. If so, you will run out of stamia and loose.

Hey guys, do yo know if some of the armor was hit off the body? Like small pieces? Or just not at all?

Also, was thinking, maybe when you counter someone very hard, maybe you could disarm them or knock them down? And a little finisher?

I like the combat system so far. Not far too difficult for the most of us and not too easy that you could defeat everyone any time. The rpg elements will provide that extra amount of boost to your skills that even gamers with slow reactions or some kind of handicap could still be able to enjoy the game.
So please keep it that way.

I agree that defending should generally take less stamina than attacking. I also hope there is a more dynamic interplay between stamina and the damage that you successful strikes actually do. I was always bothered by how stamina had very little effect on melee combat in Skyrim, save for power strikes. Having to manage stamina should be a key factor in combat and improving stamina through combat experience, exercise, diet, etc. should also factor in largely.

I got the sense that blocking/striking success will be modified by skill. So if I am much more skilled in swordmanship than my foe, then I will pretty much be able to block all attacks. If, however, we are evenly matched maybe he will have a 10-20% chance of overcoming my block. This percent would go up if I were facing more skilled fighters.

While this is not as twitch skill based as some would hope, I think it does add more realism than a true block anything button. Also, like others have said, this is still early in development and I am sure they are still updating the combat system.

I don’t think anyone should assume that what we see in a video right now is exactly what we’re going to get. It’s an attempt to show us what they’re in the process of doing.

I would think it’d take less effort for a good swordsman to defend than attack, especially if his opponent is telegraphing strikes. In that sense, it may work to require less to block, though if you keep blocking the entire way without using any sort of timing, it ought to wear you down faster. In other words, you should see a benefit to your side of the fight if you time it right.

Some way of factoring in your skill against an opponent’s, plus weapons and armor, also makes sense to me.

There’s a lot they can do with this to make it look and feel good without it being as simple as “permablock, then hit back.”

Dismemberment? Cannot promise. We like the idea but it is technically very challenging taking the clothing system of ours into account. So may be, maybe not.

Looking a little deeper into the video again, they do mention that timing your defense correctly opens up the ability to counter. If you’re just holding a defensive position the entire time so the other guy can’t get past it, that doesn’t give you a great benefit. However, it could be something you use to start to time your opponent, then when you’re ready to find an opening to exploit you can. I did not get the impression you’ll be winning a bunch of fights simply by auto-blocking everything.

On the other hand, they do mention skills and such factoring in, and you can run into people you aren’t good enough to defeat yet. There will be other options around that, including taking some time to improve. I’m very interested to see how this whole mechanic develops further as it’s refined. The guts of it seem good.

Also excited for the castle siege/defense stuff.

The “hold button for blocking” was not explained well in the video. It is one of your means of defence but the least effective one and should be used only in desperate situation as you get tired very quickly.

He wasnt exactly pierced with the sword. Imagine your chainmail blocking the attack. It still leave you shocked. Or chainmail blocking part of the damage. And by the way its an rpg, and most of the show you fatal animation and the character still lives. I’m still surprised how they made the weapon slide and cause sparks on the armor.

Well it will probably drain your stamina. I can assure you there wont be any things like just hold the defense button block 10 attacks and wait for your oportunity to strike. No

I would love to see armor being crushed in when struck with a hammer or axe.

I like the maybe part! Thanks for trying at least.

I would like that in order to be able to block an attack, you need to “guess” the direction of the next attack of your enemy, not only to press a button, and that the enemies also can fool you with their attacks

I think what this topics hows it that they did not explain the system that well.

I hope one of the devs will drop by and explain it clearly.

I Liked the update but … Still no gloves??? Full plated warrior, without even a pair of gloves?

A man with all his fingers isn’t a real man! :stuck_out_tongue:
